Plant and tool hire: what it is and what it pays

What it actually is

Taking machinery out to sites and collecting it back in: mixers, dumpers, lifts, generators. You load it, you strap it, and you often show somebody how to start it.

What you need to hold

Class 2 or 7.5 tonne with a beavertail, plus the sense to secure a load that is heavy and awkward rather than heavy and square.

What it does to the money

Not the highest rate in driving, but the days are varied and it is rarely night work.

How the work runs

The question that decides whether you stay in the job, and the one most adverts never answer.

Tramping, nights out Home every night Trunking Multi drop Store and retail delivery Shunting and yard work Night work Four on four off and fixed rotas Agency and ad hoc shifts

More who the work is for

Pallet network FMCG, grocery and retail distribution Waste and recycling 3PL and contract logistics Parcel, courier and fulfilment Construction logistics Customs and cross border
