Agency and ad hoc shifts: what it is and what it pays

What it actually is

Shift by shift through an agency. You choose the days, you see a lot of different operations, and you have no guaranteed hours.

What you need to hold

Whatever the shift needs, plus a right to work check and a licence check every time.

What it does to the money

A higher hourly rate than a permanent job and no sick pay, no notice and no pension beyond the minimum. On PAYE you build up holiday pay: check it is being paid and not rolled up into the rate, because rolled up holiday pay has rules and most disputes start there.
