Questions from employers and recruitment agencies
The doubts people actually have before they spend anything, answered honestly, then the practical detail on posting, paying, applications and data protection.
Before you spend anything
Why should I try HIRING UK when you are new?
Because the launch price is deliberately low. You can test the site properly for £25 rather than committing real money to a board you have never used. We are building a volume of genuine adverts and real applications, and early employers get the lowest rate we will ever charge. If you buy at the launch rate we hold that rate for you on the same package for three years from your first advert, while you keep advertising with us.
How many candidates do you have?
We are at the beginning, and we are not going to invent a number. Every board that tells you it has millions of candidates is counting registrations, most of them years old. What we do instead is keep the price low, fill the board with genuine vacancies, and push candidates to those adverts through our own Facebook and LinkedIn groups. Results improve as the number of live jobs grows, which is exactly why the early rate is what it is.
Will I actually get applications?
That depends on the role, the salary and the location, the same as on any board, and anybody who promises you a number without knowing those three is guessing. What we will do is tell you honestly, before you spend anything, whether we think the advert will pull, and the form itself will say so if the pay is under the range for that role, even though saying it costs us the sale. If the advert then brings fewer than three applications in its 30 days, we rewrite it and run it again free for another 30 days. The one thing that does not cover is an advert we flagged the pay on and you published at that figure anyway, and even then the re-run is free the moment you change it.
Our salary is confidential, or it is base plus commission. Can we still advertise?
Yes, and almost always without changing what you pay anybody. The rule is a figure or a range, not a single number, so all of these are fine: a band for a senior or confidential role (£60,000 to £80,000 depending on experience), a base with realistic on target earnings (£25,000 basic, OTE £45,000), a day rate (£450 per day), a rate plus allowances (£14.50 per hour plus £30 a night out), or part time pay stated honestly (£28,000 pro rata, term time only). What we will not publish is a blank, because "competitive" tells a candidate nothing and costs you the applications of everybody who assumed it meant less than it does. If the number is genuinely commercially sensitive, give the band you would tell a recruiter, which is the same information the candidate needs to decide whether to spend an evening applying. If you are stuck, send us the package and we will write the line for you.
Why is the price so low? It makes me suspicious.
£25 is a launch rate, not our standard price, and it exists so employers and agencies can try us while we are still building. The standard rate is £49. The low price is possible because there is no sales team ringing you three times, no advertising bought at auction, no office, and software that runs itself. Low cost to run is not the same as corners cut: the privacy notice, the retention rules and the deletion that enforces them are published, dated and open to anybody who wants to read them.
Should we advertise somewhere with more reach as well?
For a national campaign for twenty warehouse operatives, yes, and we would tell you that on the phone rather than pretend otherwise. For one vacancy in one town, applications here come straight to you with the CV attached, we do not sell access to candidate data, we charge candidates nothing, the price is published rather than bid for, and your advert is not competing with fifty thousand others posted the same morning.
Do you sell candidate data, or let employers search CVs?
No. There is no candidate database for sale and no candidate search on this site. An employer receives the applications candidates sent to their own advert, and nothing else. It is the easiest money in this industry and we decided not to take it.
What happens to the CVs I receive?
They come to you by email and in your dashboard. From that moment you are the independent controller of your copy. Our terms of business require you to use it only for the role the candidate applied to, keep it securely, and delete a downloaded CV within three months unless you have your own lawful basis and have told the candidate. That is the same sentence we publish to candidates.
Can I get a free advert?
While we are filling the board we do sometimes give free or heavily discounted adverts to agencies and early employers. Ask us at hello@hiringuk.co.uk and we will tell you straight away whether we can. Otherwise paid adverts start at £25 plus VAT.
How quickly does an advert go live?
As soon as payment clears, normally within one working hour on a weekday. Pay by card link and it is usually a couple of minutes, because the payment activates the advert automatically without anybody here touching it.
What if I fill the role early?
Close the advert from your dashboard whenever you like, and reopen it later if the hire falls through. Once an advert is live it is not refundable, because the service has been delivered, and we say that plainly rather than hiding it in the terms.
Do you charge candidates anything?
Never, for anything. Charging a work seeker a fee is unlawful under the Conduct of Employment Agencies and Employment Businesses Regulations 2003 and it is against our rules. An advert that tries it comes down, with no refund to the advertiser, and serious cases are reported.
Can recruitment agencies use the site?
Yes, and a good number of our early users are agencies. Post for your own clients under your own name. The same rules apply: genuine vacancies only, no fees to candidates, and candidate data used only for the role they applied to. If you are placing regularly, ask about the five pack or the unlimited plan.
How do you get candidates to the site?
Honestly: search, our own Facebook page and jobs group, our LinkedIn page and group, the town and trade pages that every advert appears on, and the job alert emails candidates ask for. We do not buy traffic at auction and we are not pretending to have a national television budget. As the number of genuine vacancies grows, more candidates arrive and stay, which is exactly why we are filling the board with real jobs before anything else. For a few pounds we will also put your advert into our own channels: see the £5 share on the pricing page.
Exactly what do I receive when somebody applies?
Their name, email address, telephone number if they gave one, their covering note and the CV file they attached, together with the advert it relates to and the date and time. That is the complete set: nothing more is sent, and nothing is held back to sell you later. It arrives by email at the address on the advert and in your dashboard at the same moment.
Can I target a particular town or type of work?
Yes, and it happens automatically. One advert covers one role in one location, or is clearly marked remote or hybrid, and it then appears on that town's page, that county's page and that trade's page as well as in search. If you have three roles in three towns, that is three adverts, because one advert covering everything helps nobody looking for work.
Can I make my advert stand out?
Three ways, all priced openly: featured pins it above standard adverts and highlights it for the 30 days, your logo can go on one advert or on every advert with the monthly branding option, and the social share puts it in front of our own followers. Prices are on the pricing page, and there is no hidden ranking for sale beyond that.
The free re-run, in full
If a paid advert runs its 30 days and brings you fewer than three applications, tell us within 14 days of it ending and we will rewrite it with you and run it again for another 30 days at no charge. Once per advert. The one thing it does not cover is an advert we warned you about before you published, where we told you the pay was under the range for that role and you published at that figure anyway, because running the same advert at the same money again would only fail the same way. Even then the re-run is still free the moment you change what we flagged: put the pay in the range, or say in the advert why the figure is fixed. Two things worth saying about it. Fewer than three rather than none, so a single time waster does not cost you the offer. And 14 days rather than forever, because a rewrite is worth doing while the vacancy is still open. Miss the 14 days and ask anyway: if the delay was ours, or you were away, we will still do it.
What if I am not happy with what I get?
Tell us, and we will put it right if it is our fault. Email us or use the complaints form, which gives you a reference straight away and an acknowledgement by email. Every complaint gets a full written answer, normally within 10 working days, and there is an escalation route to the director published on the site rather than hidden.
How long until I see results?
Most adverts that are priced realistically start seeing applications within three to seven days. If yours is quiet after a week, tell us and we will look at it with you and rewrite it free. If the full 30 days bring fewer than three applications, tell us within 14 days of it ending and the re-run is free, on the terms set out under the free re-run below.
What actually makes you different?
Applications come straight to you. We do not sell access to candidate data. The price is published and the same for everybody. A failing advert gets fixed and re-run for nothing, on written terms rather than goodwill. A person answers the email. And we say plainly what we do not do, which is most of what you have just read.
Posting a job
How do I post a job advert?
Create a free employer account, press Post a job, write the advert and choose a package. We raise an invoice, and the advert goes live as soon as payment clears, normally within one working hour on a weekday.
How long does an advert run?
Thirty days from the day it goes live. You can close it early from your dashboard the moment the role is filled, and reopen it later if the hire falls through.
Can I edit an advert after it is live?
Yes, from your dashboard, as often as you like. Editing is free and does not restart or extend the 30 days.
Can you write the advert for me?
Yes, at no extra cost. Send us the role, the pay, the location and the hours and we will draft it. A clear advert with a real salary gets several times the applications of a job description pasted in from a Word file.
One advert, one job?
Yes. One role in one location per advert. If you are recruiting five drivers on the same terms in the same depot that is one advert, not five.
Applications
Where do applications go?
To the email address you put on the advert, with the CV attached, and into your dashboard at the same moment. Nothing is held back and there is no cap on how many you receive.
Can I download the CVs?
Yes, any application, as the original file. They are yours to use for that vacancy, and you become the controller of your copy.
What if I get no applications?
Tell us within 14 days of it ending and we will rewrite it with you and run it again for another 30 days at no charge. Once per advert, and "no applications" means fewer than three, so one time waster does not cost you the offer. Usually the fix is the salary, the job title or saying where the work actually is. The only advert this does not cover is one where we told you the pay was under the range before you published and you published at that figure anyway, because the same advert at the same money fails the same way. Change that one thing and the re-run is yours.
Can I search your CV database?
There is not one. We do not hold a searchable pool of CVs and we do not sell candidate data, which is a deliberate choice about risk and trust. People apply to your advert, and their CV comes to you.
Prices and payment
What does it cost?
£25 for a single advert, £45 featured, £89 for five advert credits, £5 to share it on our social channels, £15 for the full social push, £99 a month for unlimited featured adverts. Those are today's prices, on the website, the same for everybody. The standard rate for a single advert is £49, and if you buy at a launch price you keep it.
How can I pay?
Card payment link, bank transfer, PayPal, Direct Debit for monthly plans, invoice on 30 day terms for approved accounts, or cheque. Every method settles against the same invoice reference.
Do you charge VAT?
We are not VAT registered yet, so today's invoices carry no VAT. When that changes the invoice will say so plainly.
Can I use a purchase order?
Yes. Give us the number when you order and it appears on the invoice. It does not change the payment due date.
Can I get a refund?
Before the advert is published, yes, in full. Once it is live it has been delivered, so no, although you can close it whenever you like. Monthly plans cancel with 30 days notice.
Is there a contract or a minimum term?
No minimum term on adverts at all. The monthly plan is rolling. The whole agreement is published at /contract, and you can download it as a PDF.
Rules and data protection
Are you a recruitment agency?
No. We sell advertising and never take a percentage of a salary. There is no placement fee and nothing extra to pay when you hire somebody.
What can I not put in an advert?
No fees charged to jobseekers, no franchise or business opportunity dressed up as a job, no discriminatory wording, no fake vacancies to collect CVs, no keyword stuffing. The full list is in the advert rules.
What am I allowed to do with a CV I receive?
Use it to consider that person for the job they applied to, keep it no longer than you need it, keep it somewhere access controlled, and do not pass it on or market to them. The terms of business set that out in full.
Are you GDPR compliant?
We hold as little as we can, publish every policy, delete on a published schedule, and have a form that goes straight to the person responsible for data protection. Not selling candidate data removes the single biggest risk in this industry, which is why we do not.
