Questions from candidates
Applying, your CV, your data and how to spot a bad advert. Everything here is free.
Applying for a job
Does it cost anything?
No. Searching, applying and sending your CV are free and always will be. If anybody ever asks you to pay to apply for a job, that is not us and it is not legal: tell us and we will take the advert down.
Do I need an account?
No. Open the advert, fill in your name, email and phone, attach your CV and press send. Tick the password box only if you want an account to track what you have sent and delete it yourself later.
What file should my CV be?
PDF or Word, up to 5 MB. PDF keeps the layout exactly as you made it. Two pages is plenty for most roles.
What happens after I apply?
Your application goes straight to that employer, by email and into their dashboard. They contact you directly. We are not involved in their decision and we cannot chase them for you, although we will pass on a message if you ask.
Can I apply for more than one job?
As many as you like. Each application goes only to the employer whose advert you answered.
Your CV and your data
Who sees my CV?
The employer whose advert you applied to, and the HIRING UK team. Nobody else. No employer can search for you on this site and no recruiter can buy your details.
Will my current employer see that I am looking?
Not through us. There is nothing here to browse, so your details are only ever with the employers you chose to apply to.
How long do you keep my details?
Applications are erased twelve months after you send them. A candidate account is erased six months after your last visit, and we email you before that happens so you can keep it if you want.
How do I delete everything?
Sign in to your candidate area and press the delete button, or use the data request form, which goes straight to our data protection lead. It is free, you do not have to give a reason, and it is done within a month, usually the same week.
Can you keep my CV for other jobs?
Only if you ask. When you apply there is a separate box, off unless you tick it, asking us to keep your CV so the HIRING UK team can contact you about roles we are recruiting for ourselves, permanent or temporary. Only our team can see it, no employer can search it, it is erased after twelve months unless you confirm, and one click takes it off file. Everything on the site works exactly the same if you leave the box alone.
Do you sell my details?
Never. Not to employers, not to recruiters, not to marketing lists, not to anybody, at any price.
Staying safe
How do I spot a scam advert?
Nobody legitimate asks you to pay a fee, to buy equipment or training before you start, to send bank details before an offer, or to hand over your passport before an interview. If an advert does any of that, stop and email us the reference.
What if an employer treats me badly?
Tell us at hello@hiringuk.co.uk. We remove adverts and close accounts for it. For your employment rights, ACAS gives free advice on 0300 123 1100.
An advert looks discriminatory.
Report it. Adverts must comply with the Equality Act 2010, and we ask for a rewrite or remove them. Age limits, gendered job titles and unnecessary physical requirements are the usual offenders.
Getting hired
How do I improve my chances?
Match the words in the advert, put your tickets and qualifications near the top, give numbers rather than duties, and say when you can start. Our advice section goes through all of it, free.
Can I get new jobs by email?
Yes. Run a search on the job board and set an alert from the sidebar. At most one email a week, and one click stops it for good.
Nobody is replying. What now?
Ask us. Send the roles you are going for and your CV and we will tell you honestly what is putting employers off. It costs nothing.
