Customs and cross border: what it is and what it pays

What it actually is

Freight moving in and out of the country, with the paperwork that now goes with it. Ports, ferry bookings, customs references and waiting.

What you need to hold

Class 1, a passport, and the patience to sit in a queue without letting it ruin your week. Some work needs a driver CPC recognised abroad.

What it does to the money

Pays well and the hours are long. Ask specifically how waiting time at a port is paid before you take the job, because that is where the difference between a good rate and a bad one actually lives.

How the work runs

The question that decides whether you stay in the job, and the one most adverts never answer.

Tramping, nights out Home every night Trunking Multi drop Store and retail delivery Shunting and yard work Night work Four on four off and fixed rotas Agency and ad hoc shifts

More who the work is for
