FMCG, grocery and retail distribution: what it is and what it pays

What it actually is

Fast moving consumer goods: the food and household stock that moves from a regional distribution centre into supermarkets and convenience shops, day and night, every day of the year. Chilled, frozen and ambient, usually in cages or on roll cages rather than pallets.

What you need to hold

Class 1 or Class 2, and the willingness to handball cages down a tail lift into a shop with no bay and a delivery window measured in minutes. Christmas and bank holidays are the busy season, not the quiet one.

What it does to the money

Steady and year round, which is the real attraction: FMCG does not stop when general haulage goes quiet in January. Ask how many drops a shift and whether cages are pulled or pushed, because that is the difference between a tiring day and an injury.

How the work runs

The question that decides whether you stay in the job, and the one most adverts never answer.

Tramping, nights out Home every night Trunking Multi drop Store and retail delivery Shunting and yard work Night work Four on four off and fixed rotas Agency and ad hoc shifts
