What it actually is
Coils, sheets, plate, beams and frames, off the ship at ports such as Liverpool, Boston, Immingham and Newport, or out of the mills and the stockholders. Coils travel in a coil well or on proper chocks, never loose on a flat deck.
What you need to hold
Class 1 for most of it, load securing done properly, rated chains and straps with edge protectors, and often a load restraint training record.
What it does to the money
Above general curtainsider work, because you secure and check every load yourself and a coil that moves can kill. See the ports page for where it comes in.
How the work runs
The question that decides whether you stay in the job, and the one most adverts never answer.
Tramping, nights out Home every night Trunking Multi drop Store and retail delivery Shunting and yard work Night work Four on four off and fixed rotas Agency and ad hoc shifts
