How the business check works
Only real UK businesses publish here, and only the business itself. Fake job adverts are how scammers collect CVs, passports and bank details from people who need work. So before an account can publish an advert or receive a single application, it passes an automatic check against public records. It is the same for every business, large or small, and nobody approves it by hand.
The steps
- Your company is on the Companies House register, active, and registered in the UK. Put your company number under Company details (eight characters, for example 12345678 or SC123456). Overseas companies and the UK branches of overseas companies cannot advertise.
- The company name on your account matches the register. Use the exact registered name. If you trade under another name, add it as your trading name.
- The account is opened from your company's own email address, for example jobs@yourcompany.co.uk, and you confirm it with the link we send. Free addresses such as gmail, hotmail, outlook or yahoo cannot pass: anybody can open one in any name. A link that arrives at your company's own domain is the proof that the account really belongs to the company.
- Your website is on the same domain as that email address. Add it under Company details.
- Your domain is established. It must be at least 90 days old, or date from when your company was formed. This stops lookalike domains bought last week to pretend to be a real company. If yours is newer, the check passes by itself on the day it is old enough.
- One company number, one business. If another verified account already uses your company number from a different domain, yours waits. Colleagues at the same company use the same domain and are fine.
When every step passes, your account is verified at once, your adverts can go live and the green badge appears beside them. If something is missing, your dashboard lists exactly what, and we send you one email saying the same. Correct it under Company details and the check runs again by itself.
The rules after that
- Jobs in the United Kingdom only. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Not work abroad, and not jobs that lead to it. Remote work must be done from the UK.
- Applications go only to your company. CVs are sent to the email address of your verified account, or another address at your own domain. Never to a free mailbox or another domain.
- Change your company name, number or website and the check runs again. Your adverts pause until it passes, so a verified account cannot quietly become somebody else's.
- No fees to candidates, ever: not for training, uniform, visas, checks or "processing". Adverts that ask are blocked. See the advert rules.
- Using another company's name, number, address or domain is fraud. We close the account, keep the records and report it to Action Fraud and the police, and we tell the company that was impersonated.
Why we do it this way
A candidate decides whether to send a CV on trust. Every fake advert we let through spends that trust, for us and for every honest business advertising here. A real UK business passes this check in minutes. A business that cannot pass it does not publish here.
The rules are part of the employer terms of business, section 5a. Candidates: see staying safe from job scams.
