5 questions to ask before you take an agency driving job

5 questions to ask before you take an agency driving job: Who pays me: the agency or an umbrella company? Weekly pay, and how is holiday paid? Are my hours guaranteed? What is the work, exactly? What changes after 12 weeks?
  1. Who pays me: the agency or an umbrella company?
Ask for the key information document. The law says you get it before you agree terms: it names who pays you, how, and every deduction. If an umbrella pays you, ask what it keeps each week.
  2. Weekly pay, and how is holiday paid?
Paid weekly or monthly, and is holiday paid when you take it or added to the hourly rate (rolled up, 12.07 per cent)? Rolled up is legal for irregular hours, but it should be shown separately on the payslip.
  3. Are my hours guaranteed?
Ask what happens when a shift is cancelled late, and whether there is a minimum number of hours a week. Write the answer down.
  4. What is the work, exactly?
Trunking, multi-drop, tramping? Handball or none? Start time or start window? Nights out? A good advert answers these before you ring.
  5. What changes after 12 weeks?
After 12 weeks in the same role with the same hirer you are entitled to the same basic pay and conditions as their own staff. Ask when your 12 weeks start.
