Hotel housekeeping and room attendant jobs: what the work is really like
5 minute read · 2026-11-01
Every hotel runs on its housekeeping team. Guests rarely see them, but they notice instantly when the work has not been done. It is one of the easiest ways into hospitality, with no qualifications needed, and one of the most physical jobs in the building.
What the job involves
A room attendant cleans and resets guest rooms: stripping and making beds, cleaning the bathroom, vacuuming, restocking towels and toiletries, and reporting anything broken or left behind. There are two kinds of room. A departure, where a guest has checked out, needs a full clean. A stayover needs a lighter refresh. Most hotels set a target number of rooms per shift, and the mix of departures and stayovers decides how hard that shift is.
Shifts usually start early, often between seven and nine in the morning, and finish in the afternoon. Weekends and bank holidays are the busiest days. There is a lot of bending, lifting and pushing trolleys, so good shoes and proper manual handling training matter.
What it pays
Room attendant jobs are usually paid by the hour, at or above the National Living Wage, which is £12.71 an hour from 1 April 2026 for workers aged 21 and over. Supervisors and head housekeepers earn more. See our salary guide for typical ranges.
The piece rate trap
Some employers talk about pay per room rather than per hour. Whatever the arrangement, you must still be paid at least the minimum wage for every hour you actually work. If a target of rooms takes you nine hours and you are paid for seven, that is unlawful. Keep a note of your start and finish times every shift.
Tips: the rule that changed
Since 1 October 2024 the law requires employers to pass on all tips, gratuities and service charges to workers, without deductions, and to have a written policy on how they are shared. That includes agency workers. Housekeeping teams often miss out when tips are left at reception, so it is worth asking how the hotel shares them.
Where it can lead
Room attendant, then floor supervisor, then head housekeeper or executive housekeeper in a large hotel. Housekeeping is also a route into front office and hotel operations for people who want to move across.
