Christmas temp work in 2026: how to get it, and what you are owed
6 minute read · 2026-11-01
Every year the run up to Christmas creates a second jobs market. Warehouses pick and pack for online orders, delivery firms add rounds, shops extend their hours and hotels fill for parties. Most of that work is temporary, much of it is through agencies, and a good share of it turns into something permanent in January for the people who shine.
When to look: now, not in December
The big warehouse and parcel operations start recruiting for the peak in September and October and are usually full by mid November. Shops and hospitality hire a little later, but the best shifts still go early. If you want Christmas work, the first half of November is the time to apply, and a job alert means new adverts come to you rather than you finding them a week late.
Where the work is
- Warehouses and fulfilment centres: pickers, packers and warehouse operatives, often on nights or weekends, sometimes with extra pay for the peak weeks.
- Delivery: delivery drivers and van drivers, plus driver's mates who ride along and carry. A clean licence matters more than experience.
- Retail: sales floor, stockroom and night fill, usually part time and in the evenings.
- Hospitality: waiting staff, kitchen porters, bar staff and housekeeping for the party season.
What you are owed, even on a six week job
A temporary job is still a job, and the law does not shrink because the contract is short:
- The minimum wage. From 1 April 2026 the National Living Wage is £12.71 an hour if you are 21 or over, and £10.85 if you are 18 to 20. Time you are required to be on site, for example a security check before your shift starts, counts.
- Holiday pay from the first shift. Holiday builds up as you work, normally 12.07 per cent of the hours you work if your hours change week to week. If you leave before taking it, it must be paid in your final pay.
- Breaks. If you work more than six hours you are entitled to a 20 minute uninterrupted break, and to 11 hours off between one working day and the next.
- Sick pay. Since April 2026 statutory sick pay starts from the first day of sickness, not the fourth.
- A payslip every time you are paid, showing your hours if your pay depends on them.
- No fee, ever. An agency may not charge you for finding you work. If anybody asks you to pay for a job, a uniform deposit or a "registration fee", walk away and read our guide to spotting job scams.
Turning six weeks into a permanent job
Employers keep the temps who made their peak easier. It is rarely about being the fastest picker. It is about turning up on time every shift, ringing in early if something goes wrong, learning the second job when asked, and being the person the supervisor does not have to chase. In the first week of January, ask your supervisor directly whether there is anything permanent. A surprising number of people are kept on simply because they asked.
